Transfer Print onto Chalkboard Ribbon
Let me show you how to transfer print to chalkboard ribbon…Ya’ll, I purchased this fabulous chalkboard ribbon LAST YEAR! I loved it so much that I had to have it. I got it back to the wreath shop and then it just sat there…ugh, I was so intimated to use it. I just kept looking at it…it was screaming for me to use it. I mean chalkboard is so popular right now. Can you relate? Then the buyer’s remorse set in. Why did I purchase this when my handwriting is so elementary? Why did I think I could use chalk for wreaths that are meant to hang outside in the dampness?

Then the AH HA moment! I saw a video on how to transfer print onto a chalkboard tray using chalk and the print was legit, professional. I could do that! Then I started thinking why not use a permanent marker so it would not rub off! Jackpot!
Here are my instructions on how to transfer print to chalkboard ribbon:
Supplies
- 2.5″ Chalkboard ribbon
- Printer and paper
- White Chalk
- Ballpoint Pen
- Permanent Paint Pen/Marker ( I used Craftmart from Michaels.com)
- Masking Tape
- Scissors
Step 1 -Measure and Cut Ribbon
Measure the length of the ribbon streamer you want to use. I like to leave about 4-5 inches on the ends and have it loose in the middle.
Step 2 -Print your design
I downloaded a chalk friendly font from dafont.com. The ones I like to use are FFFTusj and Chalk Hand Lettering. Then use a word processor to type out your phrase to the height and length you want and print. Cut out your phrase using scissors.
Step 2 -Chalk it Up
Turn the phrase over and on the back, use white chalk to completely cover the back of the printed phrase. You will need to tap the excess chalk into the trash can.
Step 4 -Transfer
Then layout your ribbon streamer down on the table and center the chalked up phrase on top of it. Tape both the phrase and the ribbon down to the table using masking or painters tape to hold it in place. Your print side of the phrase is should be facing upward. Using a ballpoint pen, trace the phrase all the way around. Now carefully lift each side of the tape up separately to remove the printed phrase but place the tape back down so it is still holding your ribbon.
Step 5 – Make it Permanent
Using a white permanent paint marker, trace over the chalk outlines. Let the paint dry and then dove tail the ends of your ribbon streamer and attach it to your wreath. Feel free to experiment with different colored paint pens, which would look great for the holiday season!

Here is a wreath I made using this technique.
I love that you can use this ribbon in wreaths, Christmas Trees, customized gifts, etc. How would you use this technique on your next chalkboard project? Leave a comment and let me know how you liked this tutorial.
Happy Wreathing,
Julie

Hi Julie,
I hope this is not a silly question but can you please tell me what did you use to “clean-up” around the lettering (step 5)? Is it as simple as wiping off?
Thanks for sharing!
I used a dry paper towel. I like to leave some residue to make it look authentic chalkboard like.
Thanks so much!

Thank you for your kind comments! I looked it up using your name and also with your email and I don’t see a purchase. Only for the free gift. You can purchase at http://www.learndecomeshwreaths.com Thank you for your consideration.
Ok but where can I find these signs? Would like to make some college wreaths but need some items to go on them? Where can I find them?
Which college signs? I don’t see any in this post. I purchase my round signs wholesale from a vendor. I list all my vendors in my ebook, http://www.learndecomeshwreaths.com It is listed in the forum as well as the closed Facebook Group, which customers are granted access with the ebook purchase.
I just now saw where if you donate you can get one of your ebooks or video is it too late to do that?
No, it is not. You can donate here http://www.gofundme.com/dancekat
Thank you for your consideration!
Julie, what a great idea! Thank you, as always, for your creative “free” tips and generosity. I just saw the e-mail regarding GoFundMe. Let me encourage everyone who can, to go to the site and help her daughter fulfill her dance dream. Julie gives SO much; this is a way for us to give back for all we have gleaned from Julie and say thank you; we appreciate you! God bless you all.
