This patriotic hydrangea wreath features an eclectic mix of red roses, blue hydrangeas, and textured greenery. Plus, it’s totally on-trend with chinoiserie-inspired silk ribbon. 

DIY Patriotic Hydrangea Wreath

Today’s design is a patriotic spin on the chinoiserie trend popping up in the design space – a 4th of July hydrangea wreath with delicate ribbon accents. 

This patriotic wreath is perfect for 4th of July celebrations, but is subtle enough for year-round use (which your customers will love).

Supplies for this project

You’ll need: 

• 14” Grapevine wreath
• Silk wired ribbon
  • 2 ½” Chinoiserie 
  • 1 ½” Swiss dot inlay with lace trim
  • 1” Solid red
• Faux greenery
  • Magnolia leaf
  • Pistachio leaf
  • Mini cup leaf
  • Bamboo leaf
  • Small fern
• Faux florals
  • Blue hydrangeas
  • Red roses
  • White filler flowers 
• Styrofoam
• Moss
• Zip ties
• Green pins 
• Hot glue
• Florist wire
• Rustic wire
• Wire cutters
• Scissors 

How to make a patriotic hydrangea wreath

1. Prepare the base

Clean up your grapevine with wire cutters for a polished 4th of July wreath. 

Then, attach a styrofoam square to the bottom inner rim of your wreath. Attach it with hot glue and a zip tie.

Use green pins to secure a bit of moss on top. 

2. Hand-tie a patriotic ribbon

For this ribbon, I tied three 5” loops of 2 ½” chinoiserie ribbon, three 5” loops of ½” Swiss dot ribbon, and one 5” loop of 1” red ribbon. 

Secure the center with florist wire, then attach it to the bottom of your wreath. Weave the wire ends through the grapevine and twist to secure it. 

Dovetail and trim streamer ends as needed. 

3. Add diverse greenery

For greenery, begin by adding magnolia leaves behind your bow, securing them with hot glue. Repeat this process with pistachio leaves, all the way around the bow. 

4. Add patriotic florals 

Evenly integrate five hydrangea blooms throughout your greenery, securing each flower with hot glue. Repeat this process with four bright red roses, keeping the larger blooms closer to the bow.

5. Include filler florals and greenery

For additional texture and contrast, hot glue small white flowers throughout the base. Repeat this step with cuttings of mini cup leaves. 

Add bamboo leaves for length and interest. Then, finish with a small textured fern for extra visual interest. 

6. Finish your patriotic hydrangea wreath

To finish your 4th of July wreath, add a few streamers of red and chinoiserie ribbon to the bottom of your design. 

Then, flip your wreath over and clean up long stems or hot glue strings. Also, cover your mechanics with a magnolia leaf and hot glue. 

For the final touch, add a ribbon hanger by layering a cut of ribbon over a cut of chinoiserie ribbon. Loop them around the top of the wreath. 

Twist a loop of rustic wire for the hanger and zip tie it to the ribbon pair. Wrap the wire ends around the zip tie, then cover the wire with hot glue and a trim of polka dot ribbon. 

And with that, your patriotic wreath is complete!
