How to make a fall sunflower hanging door basket
1. Prep base
The first step to your hanging door basket with sunflowers is to prep the base.
Fill the woven basket with brown paper, topping it with a piece of green styrofoam cut to size. Then, cover the foam with Spanish moss, securing it with a few florist U pins.
2. Build a form with focal florals
Next, begin adding focal sunflowers (about 5) at varying heights evenly throughout the basket, securing them with hot glue.
If the arrangement needs more height, add wooden floral picks to the ends of the stems.
3. Add greenery
For greenery, start with a linear bowwood, adding height behind the sunflowers and creeping around the sides, bending each piece as you go.
Then, choose a greenery with a wider and rounder leaf. Begin filling in, coming around the sunflowers.
4. Include filler flowers
To give more texture and variety, we’re going to include touches of wildflowers.
Pull your sprays apart to give you more control, then add bits throughout your base for an even wash of color, securing everything with hot glue.
Add small pieces to the front, bending bits over the lip of the basket.
5. Create a simple bow
Then, create a quick bow, cutting a 16” streamer of ribbon, pinch, and pleat.
Measure 12” of ribbon for a 6” loop, then pinch, pleat, and twist. Repeat for a total of three loops then trim the streamer.
Secure the center with florist wire, twist out an inch, trim, and bend to create a loop.
Attach the bow to a florist pick, dip it in hot glue, and place it on the side of your arrangement base.
5. Finishing touches on your fall sunflower hanging door basket
For even more dimension, add clippings of light green boxwood throughout. This will fill in holes and help draw the eye. Add small pieces at the front, bending down over the basket.
Finally, include a few minimal floral buds for an even distribution of white color and a touch of whimsy!
